Guide to Retirement

Plan now for Retirement

If you’re like most of us, you probably believe that retirement planning is something that you start thinking about when the end of your career is in sight. Nothing could be further from the truth. The secret to a successful retirement is getting started early: it’s never too early to start planning and saving for your retirement.

At Retirement

The big day is here! Before you celebrate, there are a few things you need to take care of as you close out your career as a City of Seattle Fire Fighter:

  • Drop off your equipment at the commissary (see the Return of Equipment form in the retirement packet). You can purchase your helmet, passport shield, and rescue helmet, if applicable (see the Helmet(s) Receipt form in the retirement packet).
  • Note that your computer access will be terminated at the close of business on your separation date, including access to:
  • Email
  • The CAD system
  • The City payroll system
  • Your station access will be terminated at the close of business on your separation date.
  • Your final paycheck will be deposited at the end of the first pay period after your separation date.
  • Your final cash-out will arrive at the end of the second pay period after your separation date.

Shortly After Your Retirement Date

The Department of Retirement Systems suggests you do the following shortly after your retirement date:

  • Make sure the retirement information on your benefit letter is correct. You’ll receive this letter once DRS calculates your monthly benefit.
  • Contact DRS if you don’t receive your first payment within one week of the date listed in your benefit letter.
  • Ensure the deductions on your monthly benefit statement are correct.
  • Sign up for health insurance if you haven’t already done so.

During Retirement

Make sure you regularly review your benefit statements and keep your contact and beneficiary information up to date with all the agencies from which you receive benefits.
