Retiree Group Visit: Staying Healthy & Connected After the Job

When Seattle Fire Fighters retire, the gear may come off, but the risks—and the bonds—don’t go away. That’s where the Retiree Group Visit (RGV) comes in.

In this episode of Listen Up L27, host Jen Pennington talks with Dr. Marcie Hamrick, Medical Director at Station 2 Clinic, and retired fire fighters Frank Brennan and Tim O’Mahony about a new program designed specifically for life after the firehouse.

The RGV is more than a checkup. It’s a chance for retired members to:

  • Fire fighter-focused health screenings tailored to the unique risks of the job
  • Guidance on what to ask your primary care provider for in ongoing care
  • Updates on long-term health risks like heart disease, cancer, and occupational exposures
  • Mental health awareness and resources to support emotional well-being
  • Physical therapy suggestions and support
  • Connection with fellow retirees—share experiences, swap tips, and strengthen old bonds

Frank and Tim discuss how the program turned out to be more powerful than they expected—part health check, part peer support, and part reunion with old friends. For Dr. Hamrick, the group setting offers a rare chance to see how fire fighters are really doing in retirement, which helps her better care for both active and retired members.

If you’re a retired Seattle fire fighter who’s still active in the union, the RGV is open to you. Sessions are held at Station 2 Clinic, typically in the fall and winter, with limited spots available each time.

Why it matters: Retiring is more than “hanging up the gear.” It’s finding new meaning, maintaining your health, and staying connected with the family you served beside for decades. The Retiree Group Visit is here to make that transition stronger.
