Frequently Asked Questions
How is “behavioral health” different from “mental health”?
Behavioral health refers to the connection between specific behaviors and the health and well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. This includes actions that impact your physical and mental health, such as eating and drinking habits, exercise, and substance use, as well as mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress. “Behavioral health” is often used interchangeably with “mental health.” However, the term “behavioral health” is broader in this context. It describes the comprehensive program that includes all the services and benefits that support mental well-being, promote resilience, and address issues like trauma, stress management, depression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation that fire fighters often grapple with. The enhanced behavioral health benefit aims to provide an early intervention model to prevent these issues from developing to a crisis level.
